COP28

ICC, as the official UNFCCC focal point for business and industry, will be actively engaged in the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 which starts this week.

Through ICC, members of ICC Switzerland have access to COP28. MSC, Nestlé, Swiss Re, Syngenta and Coca-Cola HBC will be in Dubai!

ICC Background

COP28 represents the most critical test of the international community’s commitment to the Paris Agreement goals.

Countries at COP28 are expected to deliver a rapid response plan to the first-ever Global Stocktake (GST) of collective climate progress since Paris – to put us back on track on a 1.5 °C trajectory and decarbonise every economic sector at a pace and depth not seen before, while also supercharging financing for the most climate vulnerable, improving people’s lives and ensuring sustainable economic growth and prosperity for all.

As the voice of the real economy in the UN climate process, ICC will again engage prominently on the big ticket issues for business up for discussion, most importantly:

  • on the delivery of a forward-looking GST outcome that looks at barriers and gaps, but even more importantly, shows the actions and solutions needed to address these;
  • on the fulfillment of US$100 billion in climate finance promise as a baseline and robust progress towards an ambitious collective climate finance goal post-2025;
  • and on the full and swift operationalisation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement on international carbon markets.

ICC Key Policy Deliverables

Over the past months, ICC has brought expertise from across ICC Policy Commissions to deliver a series of key policy papers, specifically:

  1. Proposals for effective carbon pricing, looking at issues of leakage and linking
  2. Principles for sustainable and sustainability-linked trade finance transactions, covering key economic sectors (agriculture, energy, automotive, textiles)
  3. Reports focusing on barriers businesses face in taking ambitious climate action – on reporting for small and medium-sized enterprises; impact of competition law enforcement on collaborative climate solutions; removing barriers to advance circular economy approaches; and a discussion on addressing misleading environmental marketing claims/greenwashing.

ICC Switzerland sent last week this open letter to the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment and Head of Delegation, urging them to deliver a successful outcome.
